Tie-dyed Sagara embroidery Oshima tsumugi

Tie-dyed Sagara embroidery Oshima tsumugi

It began to create this kimono after meeting a rare white texture of Oshima tsumugi. (Tsumugi is a hand-spun silk.) We decided to bring it to a tie-dyer in order to create one of a kind kimono since we met this very precious white texture of Oshima tsumugi. We cleared many issues after spending a lot of time discussing such as “Is it possible to tie-dye Oshima tsumugi? “, “Which tie-dyed method will be suitable for this since it tends to be colored uneven?”, “Does it come out as we expect?”, or “Can we express a sharp outline where we tie-dye?”.

Finally, we had decided to tie-dye with Kiku-kaede pattern using Kyoto-like red color. (Kiku-kaede pattern is designed flowers of chrysanthemum and leaves of maple.) For highlighting the pattern, we used Sagara embroidery on each pattern. (Sagara embroidery is embroidery method which repeats to take out thread from back of texture and make a knot. ) This Oshima tsumugi was created by collective effort of wonderful artisans methods.

If you wear as a kimono, we recommend to wear with an autumn Nagoya-obi or Hassun-obi and autumn small items so that you can create an autumn season style. It can be tailored as a fashionable coat, a raincoat, or an autumn coat that does not have a lining. Not many people tailor Oshima tsumugi from the beginning, but actually Oshima tsumugi is very light and not bulky so this is better suited for a coat which can be put in a bag after taking it off in some cases.
